The Malden Arms apartments at 720-730 E. 12th Avenue (also addressed as 1165 Clarkson) were constructed in 1923 by the Berkshire Investment Company at a cost of $30,000. Building permit #4231 lists Berkshire as the builder, but no architect is named, although the building’s distinctive style elements seem to indicate that is was architect-designed. The Malden Arms were completed in January 1924, and described in newspaper advertisements as having large living rooms, oak floors, and tiled baths and kitchens. Each apartment also had built-in Murphy beds and a breakfast room. Rent in 1924 ranged from $60 to $75 per month.
