"Courvoisier Block"

Printer-friendly version

At the corner of Broadway/Dakota is the "Courvoisier Block" which was built in 1893 by the pioneer watchmaker and jeweler, Auguste Courvoisier. In 1866, Courvoisier wanted to go West to Sacramento but when snow stopped his wagon in Denver, he decided that Denver was the land of opportunity. Auguste Courvoisier was an ingenious man. During this travels west, he outfitted his "Ambulance wagon" with all of his jewelry equipment to create his wagon as a jewelry store on the planes. Seeing that many wagons would be overtaken when fording the river, he constructed his wagon into a boat shape. He stopped his boat wagon right at 1732 Larimer and set up his jewelry and watch repair businesses upon arrival. Auguste operated his jewelry store from 383 S Broadway for about 5 years before passing away on the front steps."
