1560 Downing Street, aka Kenilworth Court Apartments, were completed in September 1907. The three-story apartment house, constructed of Harvard brick and decorated in white stone, cost $30,000 to build. It was designed by architect William Ellsworth Fisher of Fisher and Fisher architects, one of the most influential architecture firms in Denver. Their work includes the Denver City Tramway Building and the A.C. Foster Building, both listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
At the time of construction, the apartment house drew attention because it was one of the only flats in Denver to offer private entrances to all but two units. A 1907 Rocky Mountain News article noted the building’s distinctiveness, saying it was one of the “most modern and expensive apartment buildings in the city.” It featured steam heat, electric and gas light, elevator, and janitor service for $32.50 to $37.50 per month.
