While no building permit could be located for the property, this address first appears in the 1888 Denver city directory associated with Samuel B. Cunningham, a carpenter. Because of his occupation, it is possible that Cunningham built the home. In 1891, he sold the property to William Douglas. An 1891 building permit shows that Douglas put a brick addition on the house that same year. The 1892 Denver city directory shows that Douglas was also a carpenter. While the Douglas family owned 2009 Race Street for nearly thirty years, it appears that they only lived in the house for one year before using it as a rental property.
