While Denver assessor records list the year of construction for 2222 Gaylord Street as 1908, the property was built several years earlier. No initial building permit could be located for the property, but the address first appears in city directories in 1899. A permit pulled in 1900 for an addition to the home (#1131) confirms the earlier construction date.
The first owner of the property was Teckla Anderson, who purchased the property in 1898. According to the 1900 Federal Census, Anderson was born in Sweden c.1859 and immigrated to the United States in 1893. In 1900 she is listed as living at 2222 Gaylord along with a boarder, Nels Frohm, and an African-American cook, Jessie Bright. Frohm is listed as having been born in Sweden c.1840 and working as a liquor dealer. Anderson and Frohm were married later that year. The couple lived at 2222 Gaylord Street until Nels’ death in 1915. According to his obituary, Nels Frohm worked in mining at Georgetown before coming to Denver around 1880. He owned a liquor store on Lawrence Street in downtown Denver. Although Teckla survived him, after Nels Frohm’s death ownership of 2222 Gaylord was transferred to Caroline Frohm, his sister.
