While the majority of Denver Mint employees in the 20th century lived on the west side of Denver and near downtown one employee, James Collier lived in the East Colfax neighborhood at 1208 Trenton Street which he built in 1942 for a cost of $4000.
He worked as a Junior Melter making $6.00 day between June 23, 1941 and March 26, 1946. As a Melter he would be responsible for smelting silver, copper and zinc to produce large bars of metal that would be be turned into metal strips. Coin blanks called planchets would be punched from the strips to make US coinage.
Mr. Collier was born in Kalamazoo Michigan September 13, 1914 he would pass away two years after retiring from the Denver Mint in 1948.
The following video from 1949 documents some of the work he did at the Denver Mint.
