The entire west side of this block was initially owned by William Geddis and David Seerie, owners of the Geddis & Seerie construction company. Seerie appears to have moved to this home from his previous residence at 1763 Williams around 1893, when he is shown to have sold that property (see form 5DV.32883). 1801 Williams Street was originally addressed as 1731 E. 18th Avenue.
In 1896, Seerie sold 1801 Williams Street to John W. Springer for $25,000. John Wallace Springer was born in Illinois in 1859 and educated at De Pauw University, graduating with a law degree in 1878. After practicing law in Illinois for several years, he moved to Dallas, Texas where he engaged in law and banking. In 1896, he moved to Denver. Springer was president of the National Live Stock Association from 1898 to 1905, and later served as president of the Continental Building Company and the Continental Trust Company. He was also a director and vice-president of the Denver Chamber of Commerce. Springer lived at 1801 Williams for just five years before selling the property to Emily Cannon in 1900. In 1902, he purchased it back from Cannon, owning it until 1904 when he sold it to Robert J. Cary.
