This duplex at 2338-2342 Clay Street was built in 1904 for James K. Montrose, owner of a downtown Denver baking supply company. It was designed by well-known Denver architect George L. Bettcher, who also designed the German Turnverein, a Denver landmark, and the National Register-listed Rossonian Hotel. The duplex was constructed as a rental property for Montrose. Early tenants included a waiter at the Oxford Hotel, a boilermaker for the Burlington Railroad, and the owner of a grocery store down the block. Montrose owned the duplex until 1920.
